The context for 2020+ Leadership Models

As we enter the 2020s, never before have we seen more changes in less time: environment catastrophes worldwide, Covid-19, the Black Lives Matter crusade, robotics, artificial intelligence, SpaceX, driverless cars, an explosion of social media -- and instantaneous information across the world (to name a few).  

When Netscape went public in 1995, there is no doubt that the Industrial age had fully transitioned into the Information Age.  No longer were we defined by arms and legs, tasks, and an "I know leader" at the top. Knowledge became power, and we looked for ways in which people could gain access to a knowledge base previously inaccessible to them. 

With the onset of 2020, we commence a new age--the "Imagination Age."  Control of fixed assets or even knowledge no longer define power.  The constant generation and implementation of fail-fast ideas define power.  The leader is the creator and facilitator of mind power-- and she can be any age, anywhere, and anytime. 

The merging of machine capability and human consciousness is happening as we discover that the human mind may be adapted further and faster than ever.  Not only are we melding our minds with machines,  but we are also, ironically, returning to the ancient art of expanding our consciousness in order to keep up.   At the same time, with Covid-19, we have learned that we humans are also far more vulnerable than we have ever been. 


Our corporate organisations cannot sustain the industrial age hierarchy.  A new form of design will emerge -- but we don't yet know what it is.  I have reflected on the changes in organisation and leadership that may arise in this article.  

A new form of leadership must accompany these changes. Our Industrial Age and Information models of leadership are outdated. We need leaders who are stronger in intuition, imagination, inspiration and integration. This has never been more the case now facing a Covid-19 world.

In response to the challenge of defining the leader for the 2020s and beyond, Silvia Damiano developed the  i4 Neuroleader model and i4 Neuroleader Assessment in order to define, assess and develop leadership for the "Imagination Age."

In 2016, Silvia Damiano graciously invited me to write a whitepaper on her i4 NeuroLeader model.  This is called "Building Leaders For the Imagination Age." In this whitepaper, I write about the evolution of leadership models from the Industrial to the Imagination Age.  The whitepaper provides the context for the development of the Neuroleader model, a description of how the i4 model impacts business culture, and how an organisation would design a year of development with the i4 model. The i4 Neuroleader Assessment is a neurobiology-based leadership and wellbeing tool that helps you identify and measure the four competencies of Performance, Collaboration, Innovation and Agility.  Each of these areas breaks into four more pillars, making 16 abilities that you can see in the accompanying photo.  Each of these 16 abilities is then broken into three underlying qualities -- making 48 qualities that we examine and then develop for the 2020+ Neuroleader.


The assessment is a 128-item online questionnaire that takes 20-minutes to complete.  You can receive feedback from your manager, direct reports, peers, clients, supplier --and even friends and family members -- who often perceive your strengths quite differently from your workmates.

After the assessment, you will gain access to the "Self-Paced Virtual Debrief Course," a series of video lessons that will assist you in interpreting the results of your i4 Assessment Report and guide you in creating a plan of action for further development.    

We also encourage the leader to continue their development based on the insights that they received.  We offer a second course, called the i4 Neuroleader Course.  This is a 4-hour self-paced interactive online program that teaches you how to become a more creative and effective leader at work and in life.  It is based on a book by the founder of, creator of the i4 framework and assessment, filmmaker and author Silvia DamianoSilvia's book is called  Leadership is Upside Down: i4 Neuroleader Revolution.
